Pattern Cutting

Pattern Cutting

Pattern Cutting is a key skill that is essential to fashion design and tailoring.  A good knowledge of how style lines and cut effects a garments look.

How does the course work?

All students for City & Guilds need to complete a Design for Craft unit for the level they are working at.  The Design for Craft unit gives the learner a base and understanding for design later on.

Once the first unit has been completed the learner then moves onto the craft of Pattern Cutting.
To enable the designer to understand and create their styles, a research folder is compiled of fashion that inspire them or anything that sparks their interest in relation to their design including colours or textures they may want to incorporate into design.
This is followed by a portfolio of ¼ scale samples to be completed that take the learner through various pattern cutting techniques including skirt styles, bodice styles, dresses, collars and sleeves.
Students then move through the individual projects of the syllabus from design brief, and garment design through costing and toiling for fitting.

Level 2 Pattern Cutting

Projects include:

  • A Bodice Block and design development
  • A skirt and a trousers block with a design development from one.
  • A shirt Block
  • One piece and two piece dress block with  a design development from one.
  • A folder of work to support the projects
  • A folder of quarter scales

Due to the nature of the pattern cutting course it is necessary to toile garments as a test version to ensure the fit a pattern is correct.  However it can be difficult to carry out a fitting by yourself when making for yourself and you may need an experienced dress maker on hand to help you at some stages.  As an IDC student not only do you have the flexibility and support to work on your own time at home you also have the opportunity to attend workshops  and classes at the centre as an extra option to your course to support your learning experience.
